What is anxiety?
Anxiety is your body's natural response to stress. Some people describe it as an uncomfortable sensation in their body, constriction or heaviness in their chest, difficulty breathing, etc. While others aren't even aware of the sensations (with everything going on in our lives, it's easy to forget about our bodies), but they notice they can't relax, they're not as productive, they lack will power and energy, they somehow feel trapped, while feeling this undefined fear that appeared "out of nowhere and for no reason." And this fear often spreads from one "trivial" life situation to many others.
Anxiety is similar to experiencing stage fright or fear, except that when we experience stage fright or fear, we usually know what we're afraid of, while anxiety appears to be unfounded and inexplicable. And sometimes this fear (anxiety) is so strong it can lead to a panic attack.
When we feel anxious:
- It depletes our energy
- We have trouble sleeping
- It's difficult to make decisions
- Daily tasks become a burden
- Going to work may feel very uncomfortable
- We tend to be extra sensitive in relationships
- We don't feel like socializing
- We're afraid the situation might not improve or might even get worse.
Why do many women experience anxiety when they reach middle age?
For many middle-aged women (about 40 to 65 years old) life can become quite challenging. This is a time when you’re trying to manage multiple responsibilities and keep balance among multiple roles; the role of a wife, a mother, a housewife, a businesswoman and perhaps a caretaker for your parents. For most women this is quite stressful.
This can also be a time of many changes. Our children »suddenly« are no longer children, they need us less and less and they have left or are about to leave their »nest«. If we've been used to devoting most of our time to them (in our thoughts and actions), and especially if we've identified ourselves with this role and associated our value with it, we may experience feeling irrelevant, unwanted, unappreciated, or even rejected. These emotions can be quite painful. They limit our ability to deal with our daily tasks and to achieve goals we've set for ourselves.
Now that we have more time for ourselves and our partner, it may be a challenging time for our relationship. We might find that we no longer know our partner, that we have no common interests, that it's difficult for us to spend longer periods of time with him, that we don't know what to talk about, etc. We may feel unappreciated, ignored or not respected. Living in such a relationship can be quite a struggle. To be creative, productive, focused on what makes us happy, becomes almost impossible. This is not what we want and maybe it's time to give our relationship some thought and attention and change it's dynamics.
Then there's our parents, who have their own needs and desires and often depend on us and need our help. If they are healthy, we manage quite easily, but if they are ill, this can present quite an emotional burden.
And then there's YOU. The world has revolved around external factors and people for so long that you've forgotten about yourself and now you might feel you no longer know who you are, what you need, what makes you happy, what you are capable of, what it's like to spend time with yourself and how to enjoy it. Now that you have more time, you may start thinking about making some changes in your life. Maybe find a new job, change your profession, start a new hobby, learn foreign languages, etc. But making changes may also bring up unpleasant emotions, worries, fears, sometimes even panic.
When we want to play out all these roles flawlessly, and the demands and goals we've set are (too) high, our body starts reminding us in various ways (one of these ways is to feel anxious), that something needs to be done, some things need to change.
How I can help?
In my sessions I use the EFT modality, which is a form of Energy Psychology.
One of the key discoveries by Gary Craig, the founder of EFT, is, that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system. And by tapping on acupuncture points we can release the disruptions and achieve emotional freedom.
Anxiety, as well, is caused by a disruption in the flow of energy in our body. In the EFT session we search for the source of the disruption and address it with a proper tapping process.
The result is that in circumstances, that would previously upset us, we remain calm and sensible, we see things differenty, find solutions easily and generally feel more relaxed and confident.
The EFT approach is gentle, relatively fast and very effective.
